TYPOGRAPHY: THE LOOK OF WORDS

Sight Singing Workshop

Tour of Music History through the Ages

Beginning with the ancients that brought their music and instruments to Europe, we will follow the development of style and form, and discover the growth of our music through the ages. Students visit all of the major periods of music through listening examples and discussion of the esthetic views that fired each period. Our goal is to develop a broader knowledge and appreciation for Western European (and American) Music history.

COLOR THEORY

We may all know the R (red), Y (yellow), B (blue) color circle from grade school. And, most of us know how to mix a good palette from R, Y, B + black and white. But now, we live in a world of C (cyan), M (magenta), Y (yellow), and K (black)… and R (red-orange), G (green). and B (blue-violet) as well. Add to that… color harmony, relative color, the interaction of colors, spacial color, color psychology, color in design, color trending, and synesthesia. Let’s playfully sort it all out together one Saturday afternoon, discover some neat surprises, and take hold of a complex but deeply fascinating subject.

ON-CAMERA COMMERCIAL WORKSHOP

THE ART OF FASHION DRAWING

Have fun while exploring the exciting world of fashion drawing! In this class, students will learn how to draw the beautifully elongated fashion figure and the drawing techniques used to render the clothing on the female form. Color in Painting

Confused about paint selection and mixing? Which paint color should you use, and when? We’ll work in watercolor for this series, examining basic color theory along with instruction in understanding the colors of artists’ paints, and how to select and work with them to create the colors you need and the moods you want to set in your painting. Learn the fundamentals of painting in watercolor: choice of materials, the basic strokes and the role of water in watercolor. These classes are for the person who is new to watercolor painting or who wants to review the basics.
Watercolor Series Two (April 9, 16, 23)
Build and reinforce your watercolor skills. The instructor will select a subject and demonstrate to help you learn new skills and build on old ones. You will then utilize those concepts by creating your interpretation of a winter scene.
Watercolor Series Three (May 7, 14, 21)
Develop your skills on your own subject. Working with each student independently, Ms. Greaf will critique your drawing, help you plan your approach to the painting, and demonstrate techniques for your individual painting. Bring a photo to use as your subject.

IMPRESSIONISM II & III

Instructor: Laura Stroh

This is another course relating to the Impressionistic style of painting. When you are an Impressionist you paint your brush strokes in a certain way, and you use a lot more color as well. We will work on a 12" x 16" canvas to produce a painting that looks alive and fresh. Paint with us! You'll find that the impressionist's ideas about color and brushstroke are still very relevant today. For this course you will need to be fairly skilled at drawing. Traditional oils, water based oil paints, as well as acrylics are welcome.

ABSTRACT PAINTING FOR ADULTS

For students of all levels and experience, these workshops revisit the history of abstract art while analyzing several influential paintings. The courses function as independent workshops, or as a series. Students of all levels and experience will gain confidence and a more comprehensive understanding of what makes an abstract piece successful. A variety of painting applications, styles, and subjects will be explored. Students will create several paintings in a medium of their choice, and will be encouraged to abstract from their own representational works by analyzing and synthesizing their compositions.

Papunya Dot Painting (Acrylic)

Instructor: Daniel Brazil

This painting style arose from the Papunya art movement in the 1970s. Papunya Tula artists of Australia used a process which originally mirrored traditional spiritual ceremonies of the aboriginal people of the western desert. Aboriginal paintings are highly decorative and emotive; incorporating an innovative balance of traditional and modern techniques. The dot technique creates a visually intriguing texture and offers a sense of movement and rhythm causing the flat canvas to teem with energy and life unlike any other style of painting. During the lecture portion we will critique and discuss some actual dot paintings; as well as examine the Aborigine people’s customs associated with this art. During the practical portion we will create acrylic paintings that mirror this style. All ages are welcome. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for parents and their children to share in a rich creative experience.

INTRODUCTION TO THE PRINTMAKING PRESS

Generously donated by artist Bob Berks, the East End Arts printmaking press is available for certified members to use to create their own artwork. This workshop will certify you to use the press. Learn the components of the printmaking press, the correct set up for each of the plates, and which papers to use. At the end of the class, each participant will be given a certificate of approval for use of the printmaking press on a scheduled basis.

Relief Printmaking is the most effective, inexpensive and exciting of printmaking techniques. COLOR REDUCTION PRINTS

Color Reduction is a process which was invented by Picasso and explored by many artists. This workshop will help participants to develop all four colors from the same linoleum sheet or block through step by step instruction of the Color Reduction process. The results will be a small edition of original, four colorful prints. Experience with Relief Printmaking is necessary.

SOLARPLATES

In Solar Etching, sunlight and water will be used instead of traditional acids and grounds. The light-sensitive, water-soluble polymer plates to be used in this class are environmentally safe, eliminating harmful chemicals from the studio. MONOTYPE WORKSHOP

Explore and experiment the Monotype/Monoprint processes using a printmaking press. Participants will paint/draw on plexiglass plates using non-toxic paints. MIXED MEDIA

African Reliquary Masks

Instructor: Daniel Brazil

The reliquary guardian figure or Mbulu Ngulu was used by the Bakota Indians of Western Gabon and the eastern Congo to guard and demarcate the revered bones of family ancestors in the same way that the bones of saints are given divine significance by the Catholic Church. During the lecture portion we will discuss the many symbolic meanings and importance of these cultural icons and the ceremonial practices of the Bakota. The practical portion will be an exploration of the techniques of metal tooling or “repousse” to design and decorate our masks. All ages are welcome. This workshop is an excellent opportunity for parents and their children to share in a rich creative experience.

Tibetan Mandalas

Instructor: Daniel Brazil

The mandala is a design used by the Buddhist and Hindu religions and carries with it rich religious meaning and spiritual significance. Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means “circle” and is meant to represent the cosmos. The psychoanalyst Carl Jung saw the mandala as "a representation of the unconscious self”, and believed his paintings of mandalas enabled him to identify emotional disorders and work towards wholeness in personality. The Tibetan sect of Buddhists adapted this design technique into sand painting and used this practice in a ceremony of reverence and sacrifice that is both beautiful and intriguing. During the lecture portion we will discuss these sand mandalas and watch a short video of a sand mandala ceremony. During the practical portion we will design and create our own mandalas using a symmetry technique that can be applied to various other projects.

Scratch Board

This media is rarely offered as a course for adults. Our goal is to demonstrate the unique aspects and techniques of scratch board. We will also discover the relationship between scratch board and etching, demonstrating the numerous tools available to render many effects. MUSIC

Midi and Audio Recording with the Computer

Instructor: Leonardo Gala

This 5-week course will describe what Midi is and what Midi isn’t. First, students will learn how to set up a Midi recording studio from basic to advanced. We will discuss the pros and cons of a hybrid studio versus an all software based Midi studio. Next, we’ll learn to set up the DAW software, input audio from hardware instruments and discuss some of the ins and outs of microphones. Students will practice and learn together from each other’s recordings.

INTERGENERATIONAL DRUM CLUB

Learn traditional West African hand drumming and chant. Students will be instructed in proper hand use and technique which will enable them to produce a variety of sounds from the single skin of the Djembe drum. Instruction will be given in traditional rhythms leading to complex rhythmic patterns. Rhythmic patterns are combined with chant to produce traditional West African musical arrangements. SUZUKI GROUP VIOLIN & CELLO

The Suzuki Method is based on the same process as learning a language and is comprised of three main components: a group lesson where children play rhythm and music-reading games, a private instructional time for one-on-one attention, and the role of the parent as teacher-at-home for daily practice. Parents maintain an active role in instruction and gain understanding of rhythmical and pitch sensitivity while learning to handle the violin along with their child. Coinciding with LI Winterfest, Black History Month, and also in association with the Jazz Foundation of America, brothers Billy and Mark Johnson will accompany the gifted musician and longtime student of the East End Arts School, Brandon Boardman in concert. The program will include historically significant compositions by African-American Jazz legends through the ages: Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Herbie Hancock, among others.

Led by Northeast Stage teaching artist and director A. D. Newcomer, this panel discussion will also feature performances by professional and volunteer actors sharing the creative process of classical acting, and how it connects to the present day.

Led by Long Island Opera Executive Director Joy Berta, this event will be a Master Class Seminar presentation on the nature of Opera in general, as well as a showcase of repertoire from upcoming Long Island Opera performances. 2012 MUSIC MASTERS FELLOWSHIP

High school students with exceptional vocal ability are encouraged to apply for this intensive 10-session workshop opportunity, to be held on Mondays between February 6, and June 11, 2012. The 2012 Music Masters Fellowship will be a vocal choir mentored by renowned singer/songwriter and international recording artist Lauren Kinhan. 16 to 20 students from all 17 regional school districts will be selected entirely based upon merit and recommendation. There are no fees for submission or participation in the Music Masters Fellowship. This full scholarship fellowship program allows select students to participate in an ensemble of talent, under the guidance of a music industry professional.

There are no fees for submission or participation in the Music Masters Fellowship – 16-20 students from all 17 regional school districts will be selected entirely based upon merit and recommendation.

The 2012 Music Masters Fellowship will be mentored by Singer/Songwriter and International Recording Artist Lauren Kinhan (New York Voices, MOSS, JaLaLa).

The students will be given training in professional rehearsal and performance skills, in addition to preparation for music composition, songwriting, and studio recording. They will leave with a portfolio of audio/video materials to assist them in their future endeavors.

Eligibility:

Students will be expected to read music, and should have some choral performance experience. They will be invited to callback auditions based upon the following criteria:

A recommendation letter from the student’s Teacher, Principal or Superintendant outlining why this student qualifies according to their musicianship (talent), motivation (work ethic), and maturity (responsibility).

A recorded example* (3 minutes or less) of the student’s singing voice. The recorded repertoire should display:

o Vocal tone

o performance skill (phrasing, musicianship)

o vocal technique (range, intonation, control)

*Audio recording quality will not be judged. The EEA Recording Studio will be made available at no cost to applicants on a first-come first-served basis, in 30-minute intervals between 3:00-8:00PM, December 5 or 12, 2011. Students with a completed application and recommendation letter may reserve their recording time by calling 631.369.2171. Students may also send CD recordings to 141 East Main Street, Riverhead, NY 11901, or in MP3 format emailed to education@eastendarts.org.

Applications, recommendation letters and recorded examples must be RECEIVED on or before December 15, 2011

Callback auditions for invited students will be held on January 7 & 8, 2012.

Fellowship sessions will occur between February 6 and June 11, 2012.

DAY OF THE DEAD: CLAY WORKSHOP

Dia de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) is a Latin-American holiday celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November. During this 2-day workshop, students will use clay and learn basic hand-building techniques in order to create beautiful, elegant and macabre sculptures depicting the skeletons of the souls of the dead. All work is bisque fired and then painted in the festive colors of this joyous season.

Materials fee of $15 includes all supplies and kiln costs.

IMPRESSIONISM

Have you always liked the Impressionistic style of painting? If you have never tried painting like an Impressionist, try it... it’s fun, and you’ll be learning a lot about color. We will be painting a landscape from a photo which is provided. You will learn that making dots of colors instead of painting with solid strokes makes a painting with lively and vibrant colors. For this course you will need to be fairly skilled at drawing. Traditional oils, water-based oil paints, as well as acrylics are welcome.

PAINTING SNOW

Due to the transparency of watercolor, white comes from the paper, not from paint. In the first class, we’ll look at ways to utilize the white paper to depict white or light colored images in your painting. In the second class, we’ll look at utilizing color to convey shadows and form in “white” subjects. The instructor will provide a photograph of a snow scene for your use in creating a painting utilizing the techniques learned in class.

The drawing is the skeleton of your painting. In order to depict a scene, object, or person in your artwork, you must be able to convey the shape of that image. In this class, students will incorporate local architecture into their paintings and drawings, offering viewers a great sense of time, place and space. BASIC PASTEL OVERVIEW

SUZUKI GROUP VIOLIN FOR CHILDREN

The Suzuki Violin Method is based on the same process as learning a language and is comprised of three main components: a group lesson where children play rhythm and music reading games, private instructional time for one-on-one attention, and the role of the parent as teacher-at-home for daily practice. Parents maintain an active role in instruction and gain understanding of rhythmical and pitch sensitivity while learning to handle the violin along with their child. Violins are necessary for both student and parent.

EAST ASIAN BRUSH PAINTING

These courses are designed to explore two different media: brush strokes on rice paper and painting on silk. After practicing Asian Brush painting techniques during the first two sessions students will create their own individual paintings on silk, including silk scarves, using Gutta (resist) and other techniques. Basic Pastel Overview

Introduction to Oil Painting on Substrates

In this workshop we will explore the differences in painting with oils on various surfaces, including the technical reasons behind the differences. We will also explore the work of artists that use the variety of surfaces. The instructor will demonstrate the cleaning and preparation of all surfaces for paint, showing samples of deteriorating paintings on improperly prepared surfaces. In addition, discussion about developing and mixing colors to both compliment and contrast with the underlying surface will take place.

DRAWING and PAINTING FLOWERS

Instructor: Elizabeth Nehls

In this series of workshops, students will study flowers for their form and beauty. Students will learn to render and create compositions based on direct observation.

Working with Graphite (May 4, 11)

Students will begin with simple contour line drawings to observe flowers from many perspectives noticing foreshortening and overlapping. Using a variety of graphite pencils and graphite powder, students will learn techniques of layering and lifting to create values.

Working with Colored Pencils (May 18, 25)

Colored pencils are best known for their soft colors and the tight control they afford. Students will work on overall composition while observing the slight changes that occur as light falls on each part of the flower.

Working with Watercolor (June 1, 8)

Botanical artists very often use watercolor to render natural forms. Building on the knowledge of the previous weeks, students will experiment with various approaches to using this medium.

Learn traditional West African hand drumming. Students will be instructed in proper hand use and technique which will enable them to produce a variety of sounds from the single skin of the Djembe drum. Jennifer Gioe Peper is a visual artist working and residing in Huntington, NY. In 2009, Ms. Gioe Peper participated in the MARK09 program offered by the New York Foundation of the Arts. She has shown locally and throughout the United States, including Woman Made Gallery in Chicago; the Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, AZ; Otis College of Art and Design in LA; and the Farmington Museum in Farmington , NM.

"Incantation of Memory" is a showing of works she recently created as part of the Artist in Residence program at the East End Arts Council.

What do Leonardo’s Mona Lisa, Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, Andy Warhol’s Brillo boxes and a performance by Marina Abromovic have in common? Not all of these masters were recognized from the start as creative giants, and not everyone sees the same degree of greatness in these works. But regardless of personal tastes, there is an intuitive measure that determines what is deemed to be a masterpiece: it’s something that goes beyond technical skill, style and subject matter.

As part of our "First Fridays" series at the gallery, the East End Arts Council is pleased to present a series of PowerPoint illustrated talks and discussions exploring the art world from the perspectives of artists, patrons and critics. Art Historian and Writer Joyce Beckinstein offers a lively, interactive approach to considering works of both established and emerging artists. In this session we will discuss how and why certain works soar above the rest.

Ms Beckinstein will also relate her discussion to the works on display in our current show, "Women." Sustained by Art's power to move the viewer to see the world from emotionally, intellectually or philosophically new perspectives, this session is also an opportunity to assess personal tastes and responses to art, and to increase the enjoyment of looking at, and owning a fine collection.

In this class teens and tweens will learn how to take better photographs as they learn to see through the lens of their camera. As we wander through the grounds of the Arts Council and along the Peconic Riverfront, we’ll focus on composing images by paying close attention to what fills the frame. On Thursday, March 17, 6PM at Brecknock Hall, the East End Arts Council is proud to present our first Masters of Music Fellowship event, featuring International recording artist Corky Laing. This unique experience offers a select group of young musicians the opportunity to rehearse, record and perform a selection of original compositions under the tutelage of a veteran music industry icon.

8-12 students will be selected from Greenport, Southold, Mattituck and Riverhead High Schools. They will attend four sessions with Mr Laing at the East End Arts Council Carriage House Studio, creating songs for a final CD production and performance. They will also prepare and present a short written reflection about their experience as part of the Composer’s Forum series at the East End Arts Council Carriage House.

A rock tour de force for over four decades, Laurence “Corky” Laing has historically been called one of the first heavy metal drummers because of his powerful, passionate approach. He earned global recognition as a hardhitting musician in 1970 when Germany dubbed him “Most Powerful Drummer.” A longtime drummer/songwriter for legendary bands Mountain and West, Bruce & Laing, he’s also performed with many others including Meatloaf and Govt. Mule. His latest project, The Memory Thieves, releases its debut album in 2011.

Mandalas: Handbuilding with Clay

The Mandala is an ancient art form found and repeated in all major world religions and cultures throughout the ages. Students will use basic handbuilding techniques to create Mandalas of their own design, to be displayed on a wall or as a free standing plate. The pieces will be stained and painted with metallic paint and water based enamels to finish off the elaborate surfaces. $20 materials fee includes firing cost and clay.

Since I was a child, I loved to 'doodle' a maze on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a notebook. I have developed an easy method of creating complicated looking mazes from simple sketches of shapes or words. Bring your imagination!

March 30: Henna Stamping- Historically Henna has been applied to the skin as a ritualistic art form, but has since blossomed into a decorative fun accessory.
